Jon Hanger

Jon Hanger is wildlife veterinarian working in south-east Queensland in koala conservation programs. He set up the wildlife hospitals for the RSPCA in Queensland, for Dreamworld in Queensland’s Gold Coast and for the late conservationist Steve Irwin, at Australia Zoo on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. He has a PhD in molecular virology and conducted his doctoral research on retrovirus infections in koalas. He designed and delivered a training course for wildlife rangers in Sumatra to assist with the tranquillisation and veterinary management of snared and injured tigers and other Indonesian wildlife. Dr Hanger was the veterinarian for the tiger collections at Dreamworld and Australia Zoo between 1992 to 2008 and conducted training courses for the tiger anti-poaching rangers in Sumatra in the mid 2000s. He has authored and coauthored numerous papers on the disease and the veterinary management of wildlife, particularly koalas.
