Wild Tiger Health Project

I have been studying Amur (or Siberian) tiger conservation in the Russian Far east since receiving a Ph.D. from the University of Wyoming (USA) in 1994. From 1995 – 1999, I was employed by the Hornocker Wildlife Institute to help capture, radio-collar, and track tigers on the Sikhote-Alin Reserve, Russian. Since 1999, I have worked with the Lazovsky State Nature Reserve, Russia, on various projects including using scent-matching dogs to identify and monitor individual Amur tigers (1999 – 2006), using scat detection dogs to find leopard and tiger scats for DNA analysis (2005-2007), using camera traps to monitor tigers and other species (2006 to present), and collecting biological samples used to monitoring wildlife diseases that could threaten tigers and leopards.

I am currently employed by the Zoological Society of London via their Russian partner organization “ANO AMUR” and continue my work on Amur tiger conservation.
