Drug formulary
Dose rates of veterinary drugs likely to be used in the field or in rehabilitation facilities are given in this section.
In all categories drug doses are referenced where possible. Where this is not possible the doses given are based on the authors’ experience. All doses must be calculated on an individual animal basis and the authors cannot be held liable for any adverse reactions/side effects from dosing using this formulary.
Dose calculation: The amount or volume of any drug given is calculated by using this formula:
- Total drug dose (mgs) = Tiger weight (kgs) x dose rate (mgs per kg)
- Amount to be given = Total drug dose / drug strength (mgs per ml)
Example: Adult female tiger (120 kgs), needing drug X at a dose rate of 0.2mg per kg, using a formulation containing 10mg X per ml:
- Total drug dose = 120 x 0.2 = 24 mgs. Amount to be given = 24 / 10 = 2.4mls.
